The main areas at a glance
| Area | Known for | From the airport |
|---|---|---|
| Gulberg | Lahore’s central business district, with Liberty Market and MM Alam Road; it links Johar Town with the Cantonment and DHA. | about 5 km |
| Cantonment and DHA | An upscale area that includes DHA. The airport itself is in the Cantonment. | about 4 km |
| The Mall | The main road from the old city in the west to the civil and military lines in the east, past the Lahore Museum and Government College. | about 8 km |
| Anarkali and the old city | Next to the Walled City, the historic core, with Lahore Fort, Badshahi Mosque and Wazir Khan Mosque. | about 10 km |
| Model Town | A gated residential neighbourhood laid out in the 1920s. | about 9 km |
| Johar Town | Residential, with the Expo Centre, Emporium Mall and several universities. | about 13 km |
Distances are straight lines from the airport to the middle of the places we list in each area. Roads are longer, and traffic matters more than kilometres.
Which area suits your trip
- Business or a short stay: Gulberg or the Cantonment keep you central and close to the airport.
- The old city and museums: the Mall and Anarkali put you nearest the Walled City and Lahore Fort.
- Expo Centre or a university visit: Johar Town is closest.
- An early flight: look at hotels near the airport.
- Visiting family: stay in the area they live in or one next to it; a short drive matters more than a famous name.
What travel advisories say about Lahore
The UK government’s advice (updated 13 October 2026) says: “Lahore is the capital of Punjab and attracts large numbers of tourists and business travellers. While the city has a widespread police presence, there have been recent terrorist attacks. These have targeted public places and government or security forces. Avoid religious events or gatherings, public events and large crowds of people.”
The US advisory for Pakistan is Level 3, “Reconsider travel” (issued 16 June 2026). It notes that the US government has a limited ability to help citizens in “most areas outside of Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi”.
Advice changes. Read the current UK advice or US advisory before you book, and check that your travel insurance covers your trip.
Getting from the airport
Ask your hotel whether it arranges an airport pickup and what it costs. The UK advice is to “only use taxis from reputable, licensed companies where you call for a taxi”, and the US advisory asks visitors to “remain cautious if using taxis or online ride hailing services.”
Before you book
- Ask for the total price per night, including taxes and breakfast, and whether it is per room or per person.
- Check the address on a map against where you will spend your days.
- Ask about backup power, hot water and parking if they matter to you.
- Families: ask about family rooms and extra beds before you arrive.
- Get the booking confirmed in writing, by email or WhatsApp.
